Scaplen Lab is going places!

Thanks to Lewis, Aryana, Reza, and Karla from the Kaun Lab at Brown for visiting our lab! The Kaun lab is a close collaborator and we were thrilled to get a chance to show off our space. Looking forward to more fun and science soon!

Congratulations to Ramsha Gul and Elisabeth Hartzfeld for successfully defending their honors project to the Bryant community and subsequently graduating! Both joined the lab early in their career and received their Bachelors of Science in Biology. We are going to miss their regular presence in the lab!

Dr. Scaplen recently returned to Brown University to visit the lab of her Ph.D. mentor, Dr. Rebecca Burwell, where she spent many formative years conducting her graduate research. After an extraordinary career dedicated to advancing our understanding of the anatomical and functional connectivity of the hippocampal memory system, Dr. Burwell is retiring!

Her impactful scientific legacy is beautifully captured in her recent publication, The Anatomy of Context,” in Hippocampus—a must-read for anyone interested in systems neuroscience, memory, contextual processing, or simply looking for inspiration.

Congratulations on a well-deserved retirement, Rebecca! Your contributions to science, mentorship, and the broader neuroscience community are deeply appreciated. And thank you for your generous donation of lab equipment—the lab is excited to put it all to good use!

A warm welcome to Skylar Charles who joined the lab in January of 2025 as a full-time research assistant! Skylar, originally from Colorado, recently graduated from UMASS Lowell with a BA in Behavioral Psychology and a minor in Chemistry. We are thrilled to have you, Skylar!!

The Scaplen lab is officially NIH funded! The lab recently received a NIH Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) for Undergraduate-Focused Institutions (R15) from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). This award will fund research to investigate the neural circuitry mechanisms underlying maladaptive reward memories in Drosophila. This marks the first NIH grant to Bryant University. We are very excited to get started!

Congratulations to Lotte Guitink `24 on her acceptance to the Neuroscience and Cognition Masters Program at Utrecht University. Lotte was also recently recognized at the Athletics Awards Banquet with the Boulet Award for Academic Achievement.

Congratulations to Taryn Rauff `23 on her acceptance to the Medical Science PhD Program at the University of South Florida! Taryn graduated from Bryant in 2023 and will graduate from Bryant University’s MBA program in the summer of 2024. Taryn was also recently recognized as the NCAA Woman’s Athlete of the Year. Congratulations, Taryn!!

Congratulations to Katelyn Caldarone `24 on her acceptance to the Neuroscience PhD Program at the University of Florida! Katelyn was also recently awarded the President’s List Sash, The George J Kelley Award, and the Excellence in Psychology Commencement Awards and the Research Excellence Award in Psychology.
